Which is the Busiest AIrport in the World?

  • Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) continues to be The Busiest Global Airport in May 2024 with 5.5 million seats, 3% more seats per day than last month.
  • Dubai International Airport (DXB) remains in second place at 5.0 million seats, similar to last month.
  • Tokyo International Airport (HND) continues in third place with 4.7 million seats.
  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has moved up one place to be the fourth busiest airport this month adding 6% more seats per day with 4.5 million seats for the month.
  • London Heathrow (LHR) has dropped down to be the fifth busiest airport in May 2024.
  • Denver International Airport (DEN) has had the biggest increase in capacity this month compared to last month adding 9% more seats per day which moves the airport from eighth place to sixth.
  • Guangzhou Airport (CAN) has also seen a large increase in capacity this month adding 7% more seats per day and is the ninth busiest airport.

  • In the Top 10 Busiest Global Airports there is only one airport which is in the top 10 in May 2024 that wasn’t last year; Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) which is in tenth place and was in 24th place in May 2023, reflecting the continuing recovery in the Chinese market.

  • In May 2019, Dubai International Airport (DXB) was the eighth busiest international airport with 3.4 million seats. Five years later in May 2024, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the World’s Busiest International Airport with 5.0 million seats, a capacity increase of 49% compared to 2019.
  • London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is in second place with 4.2 million seats, which is 20% lower than Dubai International (DXB).
  • Amsterdam (AMS) has moved up a place to be the third busiest international airport with 3.5 million seats, a 3% increase in seats per day compared to last month.
  • Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) continues to increase international capacity adding 5% more seats per day this month compared to last month, the biggest increase in the top 10, and continues to be the eighth busiest airport.
  • Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in ninth place and Doha Airport (DOH) in tenth place are the only airports to have decreased capacity this month compared to last month with both dropping seats per day by 1%.

Which is Europe's Busiest Airport?

  • In May 2024, the top 10 busiest airports in Europe are all the same as April 2024 with the same ranking.
  • London Heathrow Airport (LHR) continues to be the Busiest Airport in Europe with 4.5 million seats, a 2% increase in capacity compared to April 2024.
  • Istanbul Airport (IST) is the second busiest airport with 4.2 million seats.
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) is in third place with 3.7 million seats.
  • London Gatwick Airport (LGW) has had the biggest increase in seats per day this month compared to last month adding 8% more seats and is in tenth place.
  • Munich International Airport (MUC) has also seen a significant increase in capacity this month compared to last month adding 6% more seats per day and is in ninth place.

  • All airports in the European top 10 busiest airports in May 2024 were in the top 10 in May 2023 and May 2019.

The rankings are based on scheduled capacity in the current month and compared to the equivalent month in 2023. The Top 10 Busiest Airports are calculated using total capacity (domestic and international) and The Top 10 Busiest International Airports are calculated using international seats only.
